A prominent bishop in the Serbian Orthodox Church died from a coronavirus infection less than a week after being hospitalised, his diocese said, Reuters reported.
In a Belgrade (Capital of Serbia) hospital, Bishop Milutin Knezevic, 71, and two other priests from the Valjevo diocese had admitted in the last week. All of them had tested positive for the Coronavirus in the same week.
The Serbian Orthodox Church wields considerable influence in some former republics of old Yugoslavia with around 12 million members mainly in Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia.
To prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, Orthodox Patriarch Irinej banned all Church services earlier this month (March 2020).
