Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal to set up the first central university in Ladakh with a dedicated center for Buddhist studies.
According to the report
, the Prime Minister's approval came at a meeting that was held on Monday, July 20 and was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in addition to other important officials.
Buddhism in Ladakh is ancient and widespread and a popular theme for cultural tours in Ladakh. The population of Ladakh is predominantly Buddhist, and Ladakh has been deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, which follows the Mahayana and Vajrayana schools.
As per the Census 2011, the Ladakh's population is split roughly in half between the districts of Leh and Kargil. 76.87% population of Kargil is Muslim (mostly Shia), while that of Leh is 66.40% Buddhist.
The move comes just a fortnight ahead of the first anniversary of Parliament's landmark decision that led to the Constitution of Ladakh as a Union Territory.
