Kerala High Court (HC) on Wednesday (August 12) directed the Ernakulam District Collector to take over the Mulanthuruthy Church and its premises.
According to the report
, by considering the appeal filed by Kerala Government, a single judge’s directive asked the Collector to take possession of the Church and hand it over to the Orthodox faction Vicar.
HC had ordered to take over the Church and hand it over to Orthodox faction earlier. However, the Kerala Government took no action following which a contempt of court petition filed by Fr Geo George, Orthodox faction vicar, for not complying with the court’s order.
During the hearing, the Kerala Government submitted that due to Coronavirus and flood situation prevailing in Ernakulam, the district administration is not in a position to take possession of the Church.
HC then observed that it was appropriate to seek the assistance of central forces for implementing the order.
The Supreme Court had earlier ruled in favour of Orthodox faction in a century-old dispute with the Jacobite faction. It was alleged that Jacobites refused to accept the decision and blocked the Orthodox faction from entering the Church.
