Kerala's 151-year-old church collapses

A 151-year-old church at Pallathuruthy, Alappuzha was destroyed after outer bund of Chungam Karuveli paddy field burst. The downpour force of rushing waters destroyed Paul’s CSI Church. Rev WJ Richardson built the church in 1869 and 30 families used to visit the church.

According to the report, Collector A. Alexander said though downpour has lessened, water level in waterbodies of Kuttanad did not recede much and a change can be expected from Wednesday. A 25-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been deployed to Kuttanad. The collector said that water level in rivers of Chengannur is decreasing.
 
 
It is believed that many old churches situated in Kerala than any other States of India. Christianity is the third-most practiced religion in Kerala, accounting for 18% of the population according to the Indian census. Although a minority, the Christian population of Kerala is proportionally much larger than that of India as a whole. A significant portion of the Indian Christian population resides in the State.
