On the occasion of Paryushan, a Jain festival, Haryana Government has instructed to close all the slaughterhouses. An order has been issued on behalf of the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies of Haryana.
According to the report
, the letter issued by the Directorate says that all slaughterhouses will remain closed for nine days from August 15 to August 23. It is reported that the Directorate has taken this decision after a legal notice. The order has been asked to be implemented with immediate effect.
Paryushan festival of Shwetambar and Digambar Samaj is celebrated in the month of Bhadrapada. Paryushan is an important festival of Jain people. The festival lasts for ten days. Jains increase their level of spiritual intensity, often using fasting and prayer/meditation.
India is home to 45 lakhs followers of Jainism. The population of Jains is 0.4% of the Indian population. Jains constitute 0.21 % of the total population of Haryana.
