Mumbai, Jan 28: The members of Parsi community have proposed an alternative plan for the ongoing Coastal Road Project, in order to save the Parsi Gate structure from re-installation. According to the earlier announcement of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the century old structure was to be shifted for construction of a tunnel on the outer edges of the Marine Drive limits. The authority had also approached the Bombay Parsi Panchayat (BPP) to seek its approval in removing the structure.
However, a group of concerned citizens met the municipal commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal earlier this week and proposed the alternate design. The new design recommends the proposed tunnel to be constructed in the middle of the road, which would not affect the Parsi Gate structure.
The Parsi Gate is located opposite of Taraporewala Aquarium, at the Marine Drive Promenade. The monument is styled on the basis of ancient Parsi Architecture and thereby comprises two five metre pillars made of stone. Parsis have been paying respect to Avan Yazad (water deity) for over a century.
