Harassment in Church: Christian priest attempts suicide inside Church, sustains 15% burns

A Church Father Anant Apte, poured petrol on himself and tried to suicide inside the Church. The incident took place in Nashik, Maharashtra. Police officials said that the father attempted suicide during a prayer session at St. Thomas Church in Shalimar Chowk in Nashik.

"The priest, identified as Father Anant Apte (61), poured petrol on himself and tried to set himself ablaze. However, people present there quickly doused the flames. He has received 15 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. He has claimed he was being harassed by some of his seniors," the official said.
A case has been registered at Bhadrakali Police Station, he added.
According to a local media report, Father Anant Apte said that his senior Reverend Sharad Gaikwad has not listened to him and continue to harass him. So that he decided to commit suicide.

On June 20, 2020, the body of 50-year-old Father Yeruva Bala Shoury Reddy was found hanging from his bedroom ceiling fan in Kolakalur parish in the Guntur Diocese of Andhra Pradesh State. Before hanging himself, the priest had tried to kill himself by stabbing himself in his stomach. A suicide note said he was depressed and took the extreme step.
On June 22, 2020, the body of another priest, 51-year-old Father George Ettupara, was fished out of a well near his parish in Punnathura village in Kerala state. He is also suspected of committing suicide following depression.
A 21-year-old student nun's body was found in the well of her convent on May 7, 2020. The nun belonged to the convent of the Basilian congregation in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district.
On Oct. 11, 2019, Father Mahesh D'Souza, 36, of Udupi Diocese in Karnataka State, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room. He was a parish priest and principal of a diocese-run school.
