A four-foot-tall sculpture of Mahavira of 12th century AD was found abandoned in Meyyur, a village in Tiruvallur district. It has features such as three umbrellas, Ashoka creepers and a halo around the head. The scholars confirmed it as a later period sculpture of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara of Jainism.
It was found by Jain priest a couple of days ago. The priest has discovered more than 20 sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras across Tamilnadu so far. Tiruvallur region was once inhabited by Tamil Jains and that's the reason why the frequent discoveries of the sculpture of Jain Tirthankaras from the region.
