Chennai, Mar 15: A four-foot-tall sculpture of Mahavira dating to the 12th century AD was found abandoned in Meyyur, a village in Tiruvallur district. With basic stylistic features such as three umbrellas, Ashoka creepers and a halo around the head, scholars confirmed it a later period sculpture of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara of Jainism.
It was found by Jain priest B Jeevakumar a couple of days ago. Jeevakumar has discovered more than 20 sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras across Tamil Nadu so far. Tiruvallur region, according to scholar K Ajithadoss, was once inhabited by Tamil Jains and that's the reason why the frequent discoveries of the sculpture of Jain Tirthankaras from the region.
