Due to the rise in daily deaths in the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, Churches experiencing a lack of space in cemeteries for the burial. As a result, Church leaders started recommending the cremation of the deceased. Many Christians are not able to perform last rites as per their tradition even for those who were not died because of Coronavirus.
George Fernandes, representing the Malayalee Catholic Fellowship in Gujarat (MACAF), claimed that 15 of its members had been cremated within Ahmedabad, and a few outside the city. While talking to the Times of India reporter, he said, “Lack of burial space and the present circumstance has demanded that families opt for cremation,” he said.
