1000-year-old Jain idol found in Tamil Nadu's Madurai

Madurai, July 21: A 1,000-year-old partly damaged idol of the 24th Tirthankar Mahavir was found behind Mariamman Temple at Velambur, in an uninhabited village near T Kallupatti in Peraiyur taluk.

Pandiya Nadu Cultural Foundation led by Archaeologist D Muneeswaran studied the statue. Over the years, caves, stone beds, inscriptions, and more than 100 sculptures related to Jainism have been found in and around Madurai.
