Christians condemned the call to boycott halal meat in Karnataka after some Hindu organisations opposed Halal products. However, in Kerala, the Christians opposed Halal products. Father Faustine Lucas Lobo, the spokesperson of the Karnataka Catholic Bishops’ Council, said that it all started with the hijab controversy and now halal meat, then there were other issues like love jihad. It is all game plan for the forthcoming election, which it does not want to lose”.
But Kerala Catholic Bishop Council had said that Love Jihad is the fact, and they also sought BJP’s support for the same. In January 2022, a catholic priest was booked for giving statements against halal cuisine and Prophet Mohammed during a speech at Manikkadavu St Thomas Church. The priest allegedly said that attempts were being made to convert Christian girls after attracting them through a network of juice shops.
In one State, Christian organisation supported Halal and termed Love Jihad as political propaganda, and in another State, the organisation opposed Halal and termed Love Jihad a fact, raising a question on their double standard agenda on the same issue in different States.
