Buddhavanam project senior officer Mallepally Laxmaiah invited Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama to visit Buddhavanam at Nagarjunasagar, in Telangana.
On March 13, 2023, The Hans India reported that Mallepally Laxmaiah met the Dalai Lama in his office at Dharamshala. He briefed the Dalai Lama about the Buddhavanam, a unique Buddhist heritage theme park. It is developed on 274 acres of land.
Accepting the invitation, the Dalai Lama responded positively and said, 'I will try to come to Buddhavanam'.
The Buddhavanam project was started in 2003. Buddhavanam was chosen to be constructed in this place due to its historical significance. Archaeological evidence found here since 1927 – Buddhist structures like monasteries, shrines and stupas – reveals that this place was rich in Buddhist history. It is also known that Acharya Nagarjuna, a Buddhist scholar, spent his last days on the hill named Nagarjuna Konda.
