The Darul Uloom Deoband madrassa issued a fatwa against women who performed puja of the Hindu God Ram in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Clerics of Darul Uloom Deoband said that Muslim women worshipping Shri Ram are against Islam.
On March 30, 2023, the Hindi portal Patrika
reported that under the leadership of Nazneen Ansari, the members of the Muslim Women's Foundation performed the puja of Shri Ram and sang even aarti. They further said that they consider Shri Ram as their ancestor.
After the incident, Darul Uloom Deoband issued a fatwa against these Muslim women. Islamic clerics said that Muslim women worshipping Shri Ram are against Islam. The same fatwa was issued in the year 2017. While
speaking with The Times of India, Mufti Mohammad Arshad Farooqui, chairman of the online fatwa department, said, "Islam is a monotheistic religion and goddesses. So any Muslim man or woman who worships any other god is not allowed in Islam. And those women have definitely done something wrong that they should repent by all means."
